International Markets and contexts
International Markets & Contexts encourages students to consider the
importance of identifying existing professional networks and emerging
infrastructures across the photographic sector.
Students will
develop adaptable and transferable skills in tandem with their creative
practice and by doing so identify opportunities to extend their knowledge and
understanding of visual art practices and markets.
Knowledge of
international markets and contexts will afford students the ability to
effectively network and move between different global markets therefore
providing them with an advantage over less flexible / informed competitors.
As such the International Markets and Contexts
module aims to assist students in identifying opportunities available to
emergent photographic practitioners both within and outside of the UK.
Ultimately students
will critically evaluate photographic portfolios and digital image creation and
apply this knowledge to a range of market opportunities.
Knowledge and Understanding
On successful completion of the module students will be able
to:
·
Critically evaluate how international markets
respond to photographic portfolios and digital image
creation
·
Reflect on the principles of international
photographic practice and marketing
·
Understand transferable skills in applied
photographic practice
professionally produce photographic portfolios
for external market
Module Overview:
It is important that students develop their critical
awareness and ability throughout the course. A practice of rigorously examining
and critiquing their own work within the context of wider photographic practice
builds confidence and a sense of ownership over their work, and helps the
student to focus their work and intentions.
International Markets and Contexts affords
students the opportunity to critically reflect upon their own
practice whilst broadening their knowledge of existing
avenues of dissemination and display.
Emphasis will be placed upon evaluating both their own
and others professional practice via thematic approaches to the creation of
work(s) for submission / display to a given set of criteria.
Students will also be encouraged to consider social
media platforms in terms of personal promotion, marketing strategies and public
dissemination.

Outline
The International Markets and Context module aims to assist in
identifying opportunities available to emergent photographic practitioners both
within and outside of the UK.
Brief
In curatorial groups you are requested to undertake research into
existing photographic opportunities such as New York Photo Festival, Photo
month in Krakow, International Festival of Photography Lodz, Photo EspaƱa
Madrid, Rencontres d’Arles France etc.
As a team you will define the location and theme of your chosen
festival. Each one of you will also identify one established/emerging
photographer whose work/practise underpins the stated theme of the festival.
You will be expected to evaluate your chosen photographers work in respect to
the festival theme and produce a 500-word critique of their practise.
You will produce individual bodies of work based upon the festival
theme. The resultant work to be exhibited alongside your four invited ‘head
lining’ photographers.
Finally, you will with 500-words, critically evaluate your own work
within the context of a wider photographic practice and in respect to the
stated festival theme.
Requirements
Your initial research and choice of festival, theme and key
photographers will be discussed at tutorials in order to provide you with the
confidence to commit. It will be important to take part in each week’s sessions
to develop the work as a group. There will be opportunities to have one to one,
as well as group tutorials and presentations during the 6 weeks module.
