Scotiabank Contact Photography Festival, Toronto

This photography festival is held anually in Toronto, every May.
There are over 175 venues used across Toronto.
The festival showcases 1500 artists and photographers.
Founded in 1997 as non profitable origination. The festival is devoted to the celebration of photography as a profession.
The festival has reached audience of around 1.8 million people and has an open call for submissions.
The festival generates themes inspired by discourse within the community and often the themes are rather ambiguous and open to interpretation.

Some examples would be;

2010- "Pervasive Influence"

2011- "Figure and Ground"

2012- "Public"

The 2013 theme is "Field of Vision" looks into he following;
  • photography as an extension of the eye
  • act of perceiving
  • the entire view photography has the ability to encompass
  • power of creative imagination
  • ability to conceive exceptional idea
This years festival is already set to hold the work of Sebatiao Saltago and his project "Genesis". The project is entirely black and white and encapsulates 8 years, with the starting point being 2004. His subjects include a variety of landscapes, animals and the residents of countries such as Sudan and Brazil.
